Warning! I’m about to step up on a very large soapbox. I’m not writing this post to offend you, but to awaken you. To evoke something in you so convincing that it moves you into action. I want you to feel like you must do something; to create a drive in you so compelling that you can no longer sit there on your proverbial couch….telling yourself that you’ll start tomorrow. You know you need to start today. To start now. But there’s always a reason why you can’t. An excuse that keeps you from moving.
What’s your reason. What’s your excuse?
If you’ve not already heard or read the recent statistics regarding the nation’s obesity rate, then let me share it with you.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, predictions are that by the year 2030 the number of obese Americans will be at 42% (up from the current 35%)! That’s nearly half of us!!
Here’s how the CDC defines obesity.
I suppose the first thing that popped in my head upon hearing this was simply “wow”. Incredible really that we allow ourselves to get to that point in our life. Of course we don’t necessarily ‘choose’ to be overweight–nobody wants to be obese; nobody chooses obesity intentionally. But as much as we don’t want to hear it, we do allow it to occur. The next thing I thought of is why do we allow it? We have a choice! I know there are fast food joints on every street corner. I know it tastes good and it’s satisfying and rewarding. I know there are times when it’s just so much dang easier to choose something quick over healthy. I’ve also been just as guilty of emotionally eating or eating out of sheer boredom. But just as I am the one who makes the choices as to what I eat, I am the one who will reap the consequences of it as well.
And just as much as we would like to blame someone or something for our choices (whatever those reasons may be for you), if you take the time to look, there are just as many healthy choices available to you. You just have to find them. You have to want to find them. I bet there are more blogs, websites, magazines, recipe books, workout videos, gyms and so on and so on available to you to help you more than there are the easier, more convenient, unhealthy offerings you choose instead.
America. You have a choice!
And what about our children? If you continue reading on the CDC site, you’ll find that the obesity rate in children and adolescents ages 2-19 is 17%. That’s an astounding 12.5 million of our children.
Our children are like sponges.
They watch us.
They learn from us.
They pattern our lives.
What are they learning from you?
Read the above statement again, but now look at what this increase is going to cost you and cost me: $550 billion. I can’t comprehend such an amount of money. Our nation is in such financial turmoil now I can’t imagine adding $550 billion to its bill: all by choice.
Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of death.
Don’t become a statistic.
You have a choice.
What’s your choice going to be?
