Yes! I went to the chiropractor! Quite unintentionally planned I’ll admit, but it is something I’ve been pondering over the last couple of weeks. I’ve talked to some friends who have made several trips, as well as I found other bloggers with injuries who believe the chiropractor helped them make tremendous progress in their recovery.

So this week I took the spontaneous notion to call our own local chiropractor (for which I’m grateful we have one in our small town) and I’m very pleased to report that he was very thorough with my assessment, his interview process and diagnosing my problem.

During my two-hour initial visit, he:
*interviewed me and asked me lots of questions,
*manipulated my lower back, hips and legs to check for pain areas, etc.,
*measured my cervical spine for alignment,
*took X-rays of my spine and hips,
*placed a TENS Unit (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is the use of electric current produced by a device to stimulate the nerves for therapeutic purposes) while I sat in a heated, massage chair (heaven!),
*applied a laser stimulation (light) to my right knee to stimulate blood flow for improved healing and
*scanned my feet to check the arch support, pronation, supination, etc.

He told me he actually knew within five minutes of our visit where my problem was originating.

He did agree that my IT Band was probably tight, but there is usually a problem source that causes that tightness and irritation…and for me, it’s probably my SI Joint (Sacroiliac Joint) in my hips, specifically in my right hip. It was crazy that he asked my about certain symptoms I was having before I even told him—he nailed it!

*Yes, I feel like my foot is dragging (when I’m running and having pain).
*Yes, I’m having tingling down the outside of my leg to my foot and toes.
*Yes, I tend to swing my right leg out from the hip instead of forwards and backwards when I run. (Clark has even taken my picture and video’d this bad running form for me so I could watch it and try to correct it).

Now this is only a preliminary report and I’ll go back for a second visit after he reads and evaluates the test results he did on the first visit, but I look forward to sitting down with him and hearing his final conclusion. I also feel so much better just hearing him tell me, “don’t worry, we can help you”. It’s also after he finalizes his report, he’ll know better how to provide the adequate spinal adjustments/manipulations specific to my problem and needs.

    I love my chiropractor! I believe that he is one of the main reasons I have been able to start and continue a running program without getting hurt… this time. I’ve just started following you, so I don’t know if you’ve already read the book Chi Running. I highly recommend it. It has also helped me change some of my habits to make running more enjoyable.   2. I’m so glad to hear that your visit to a chiropractor went well. I’ve thought about going but have always hesitated worried that I would leave the office with more of a problem than a walked in with.
