I’m sure you’ve heard of it, but you may not know exactly what it means.

Today I want to teach you a little more about The Glycemic Index and just how important it is for all of us to understand and live by it.

But, before we dig any deeper into that, let’s talk about carbohydrates.  I’ve talked about carbs before and just how essential they are to our body.

Carbs are our energy source.  Our body requires them to survive.  When we don’t supply our body with those carbs, it has to pull that energy source from somewhere else:  protein.  Muscle stores protein. You see where I’m going with this?  When muscle (aka protein) must be used for energy, guess what happens to that muscle?  It is reduced and weakened.  Guess what happens to our body when that happens?  Your metabolism shuts down.  Muscle fuels metabolism.  When you lose muscle, your metabolism diminishes even further and…wait for it….you won’t lose weight or even worse, you’ll gain weight.  All when you thought you were following the latest and greatest end-all diet plan by starving yourself, following a very calorie restrictive or no carb, low carb diet.

Let’s get back to the Glycemic Index.

Did you know that most foods turn to sugar in our body?  Yes, even healthy fruits and vegetables.   Now, this doesn’t mean we aren’t using the other nutrients in those foods, but our body requires that sugar for our energy source remember…even to simply walk around.

The Glycemic Index provides a measurement of how quickly that food converts to sugar.  Get it?  Re-read that.  It’s huge!

When we eat foods that quickly raise our blood sugar > we feel energized thanks to the sugar-rush, but then insulin is released to process and lower our blood sugar (cause we can’t survive with an ongoing, outrageously high blood sugar) and then in just a few short minutes, thanks to the insulin for taking the sugar of out of our bloodstream, we feel sluggish and tired.

What do we do next?  Reach for more sugar!

This continuous cycle we have put our bodies through year after year, day after day is causing our pancreas to scream “slow down” because it’s trying to keep up with insulin production.   This cycle is causing our cells to scream “slow down”, because they are trying to absorb and do something with all that sugar and then the insulin that’s being thrown at it!  And eventually they both shut down and scream, “I give up!”  Which results in….you guessed it again:  Type II Adult Onset Diabetes.

Did you know that Type II Adult Onset Diabetes is directly relational to the food we eat and the weight we’ve gained as a result of it?  Not only Diabetes, but cancer, Heart Disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol as well.

  2. Wouldn’t you know that Tamara beat me to this post! Reading about the glycemic index in easy-to-understand terms is always a magnet for fitness pros, I guess! I learned all this years ago, but it still gets a bit messy in my head sometimes. I’d love to see you post about load as well! Thanks for the great explanation.

  3. Wow, this sounds like me! I have no energy even though Ive been working out for almost 2 yrs now and Ive ran a mud run, 2 , 5k’s (or walked and ran) and living healthier than I ever have in my 50yrs. But my energy level is zilch!! And I love candy. But if I stay away from it Im ok, but once i start I cant stop! Im a sugar & chocolate junkie! And Ive been hitting it hard since Halloween and I can sure tell in my body! Especially my belly area and I hate. Thanks for this article, cant wait for Part2!

    • Thanks Kendra! Yes, you are exactly right. All that sugar will certainly drain our energy, but it also will show itself in other areas too….in the form of acne, stomach issues and even sinus infections!
